Exeunt’s Weekly Picks: 3rd June

This week's picks include shows at Soho and the National - and plenty of jism as Christopher Brett Bailey returns to Battersea Arts Centre.

1. This is How We Die, Battersea Arts Centre, London

“Chris Brett Bailey is here to fuck you up, and fuck you up fast. When the lights flick on he’s already coming at you faster than you could possibly move out of the way, like you’ve crossed the road and looked left left left and been blindsided from the right.”

Family ties.

2. The Dogs of War, Old Red Lion, London

“Tim Foley writes with acuity about inheritance and family damage.  His ability to pin these things down mean the play is an uncomfortable to watch at times and one likely to pluck at anyone who’s ever experienced similar issues within their own family, but that’s part of its strength. He articulates so well the roles people play within families, the mantles they choose to take on: the sufferer, the stoic, the escapee.”

3. Constellations, on tour

“Constellations is a marvellous demonstration of how a production can interact with all the Big Questions without making a bloody big deal about it. This is an emotional show of love and grief, yet there is a strange prevailing calm about the evening.”

The fruits of their labour.

4. The Harvest, Soho Theatre, London

“Here all we have is the work, action in its purest form and Pavel Pryazhko has crafted something indescribably compelling and curious out of it.”

5. The Beaux’ Stratagem, National Theatre, London

“It’s all very funny and very silly – a sharply-made concoction packed with one-liners whose zest has only slightly musted in time’s jam cupboard.”
