New writing, storytelling and site-specific opera.

Artistic director Steve Marmion has announced a programme of 25 new shows at the Soho Theatre between September and November this year, including a site-specific new adaptation of Puccini’s opera Madam Butterfly.

The venue’s focus on new writing continues with plays by Joel Horwood and Colin Teevan and a timely collection of pieces written in response to the Arab Revolutions. Horwood’s I Heart Peterborough, transferring down from the Edinburgh Fringe, depicts the experience of growing up gay in the provinces, while The Kingdom, written by Teevan and presented by Three Legged Theatre Company, offers a dark portrait of Irish life in the last century.

Arab Nights, running in the upstairs space from November to December, reinvents the storytelling tradition of Arabian Nights for the modern world, bringing together a collection of short plays by writers from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria. The theatre programme also includes more storytelling with the return of the Crick Crack Club and a season of horror theatre over Halloween.

The autumn’s most ambitious theatrical offering is Finding Butterfly, a new version of Puccini’s Madam Butterfly created by The Wedding Collective and staged at Limehouse Town Hall. The production, using Puccini’s original music, recasts the story through the eyes of Butterfly’s son as he explores his past.
