Edinburgh Review: This is the Title at Dance Base

Silence, breathing: Rosemary Waugh reviews Ima Iduozee at the Edinburgh Fringe.

This is the Title at Dance Base.

This is the Title at Dance Base.

This is the Title by Ima Iduozee starts with silence. And in this silence you can hear the sound of breath, feet on mat,  a body softly cutting through air. Then the music starts, and it emerges in short burbling blasts, the way sound is heard if you raise and duck your head backwards into the bath water.

Iduozee’s choreography sits somewhere between break dance and ballet. It’s visceral and ephemeral, physical and smooth. And this piece is only 25 minute long, so it seems at odds with such a brief-but-complete moment of beauty to throw a thousand words at it.

Watching, witness:

Breathing

Sweat

Muscles

Shoulder blades

Exhaustion

Complete control of a body

It’s like meditation or hypnotherapy. Go in filled with EDINBURGH FRINGE and come out recharged, emptied, calm. Twenty-five minutes of honey for your soul.

This is the Title is on until 19 August 2018 at Dance Base. Click here for more details.
