The brief
The conversation around theatre and performance is currently dominated by white writers, and we want to use our platform to help change that. We’re looking for a new columnist from a culturally diverse background to write a series of four opinion pieces for Exeunt on issues and trends in the theatre industry that interest them.

These articles don’t have to be limited to discussions of diversity or representation – the aim is to give you a soapbox to talk about the ideas you care about. We’ll help you develop these ideas into written features, offering you feedback on your work and opportunities to see relevant performances.

The columnist
You don’t need to have experience in writing about theatre. But you will need strong opinions, knowledge of the theatre, dance or live art world to draw on, and a compelling writing style. You could be a student, an artist, a performer, or a passionate long term theatregoer. Or you could be a writer who normally works in a different discipline, and would like to develop a new specialism.

This opportunity is open to all writers aged 18 or over from a black or minority ethnic background. There is no upper age limit. You must reside in the UK.

How it works
The successful applicant will meet up with Exeunt’s editors to chat through their ideas and make a plan. They’ll then write a series of four columns, each around 1000 words long. The timing of these pieces can be flexible, to suit your other commitments. We’ll offer feedback on your writing, and suggest edits or points for development where necessary. We’ll also give you £200 as compensation for your work.

How to apply
Just send us an email which contains

a) A bit about you, and why you’re interested in the opportunity (maximum 500 words)

b) Three ideas for articles you’d like to write. This is the most important part – so make each one original and compelling. Suggest a title, and outline what you’d cover in 2-3 lines. Remember that they can be about anything theatre and performance-related, not just about diversity.

c) Links to any existing online writing, if possible

The deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 22nd March. We’ll have informal chats with shortlisted applicants the following week. Please send your application email to Editors[at]exeuntmagazine.com – with ‘Columnist opportunity’ in the subject line.
